The Rich Fool
Sharing what we have with those In need
Or keeping it for ourselves?

Jesus told a story of a man who had a farm. The man had a very good harvest and said to himself. I will build bigger barns and store what I have. This will last me for many years. So that is what he did. He built bigger barns.

But that night God said to the man. This very night your life is going to be required of you. So what will happen to your riches?

This is a very sad story as the rich man in this story did not think of others when he had more food than he needed. This story could have had a very different ending for the rich man if he had said to himself. God has been good to me. He has blessed me with so much food. It’s more than I need. I will share it with those in need. If he had taken this approach. He would have laid treasure in heaven even if he had died.

It is the same for us today. What is our attitude when we have more than we need? Do we store it away or do we share it with those in need?

God says his blessing is on us when we share what we have with those in need. Sometimes we are reluctant to share because of fear. We think there would be nothing left for us but God is a giver and we can never out do him in giving.

Jesus challenged our attitude to giving when he said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward. (The story of the Rich Fool as told by Jesus is found in the Bible in the New Testament in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 12.)

Prayer
Dear God,
Teach me that
I can never out do you in giving.
You are the giver of everything.
Amen.
